Epilepsy Policy

Conwy County Borough Council operates a Gym and Fitness Studios Epilepsy and Seizure Management Policy, developed in accordance with guidance from the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and in consultation with epilepsy support organisations.

The policy is designed to promote the safe, inclusive, and supportive participation of individuals with epilepsy or seizure disorders in gym and fitness activities.

Participation with Controlled Epilepsy

  • Individuals who have been seizure-free for a minimum of 12 months may use Conwy County Borough Council gym and fitness facilities without the need for any additional precautions.

Participation with Uncontrolled Epilepsy or Undiagnosed Seizures

  • Individuals with uncontrolled epilepsy, undiagnosed seizures, or parents/guardians of children in these circumstances are advised to seek guidance from their GP or healthcare professional before participating in gym or fitness activities.

Medical advice should take into consideration:

  • The type, severity, and frequency of seizures.
  • Whether warning signs or seizure auras are present.
  • Any known seizure triggers, including stress, bright lights, noise, fatigue, or intense physical exertion.

Where an individual presents a significant foreseeable risk to themselves or others, Ffit Conwy may undertake an individual risk assessment and, where necessary, request supporting information from an appropriate healthcare professional before permitting participation in specific activities.

Where a significant health and safety risk has been identified, access to specific facilities or activities may be restricted until appropriate medical information has been received and reviewed.

Notification and Risk Assessment

  • Individuals with uncontrolled, recent or unpredictable seizures are encouraged to notify reception staff so that appropriate support and emergency arrangements can be put in place.
  • Any individual care plan or medical management plan provided should be followed at all times.

Health Considerations

  • Individuals should not participate in gym or fitness activities if they are feeling unwell or experiencing symptoms that may increase their risk of a seizure.

Programmed Sessions

  • Organisers of programmed fitness sessions are responsible for informing the Leisure Centre in advance if any participants have uncontrolled epilepsy or seizures. This will enable suitable preparations, support arrangements, and risk assessments to be undertaken where necessary.

This policy aims to ensure that individuals with epilepsy or seizure disorders can participate in gym and fitness activities safely, confidently, and inclusively, while balancing individual wellbeing with Conwy Council's duty of care and health and safety responsibilities.
