Drowning Prevention Week: 14 to 21 June 2025

This year we are supporting the RLSS Drowning Prevention Week. Drowning Prevention Week aims to help ensure everybody across the UK and Ireland has the opportunity to enjoy water, safely.

Key statistics:

  • In the UK and Ireland accidental drowning takes an average of 307 lives each year.
  • More than 44% never intended to be in the water.
  • Over 55% of parents surveyed said they would not be confident their child would know what to do if they fell into open water.
  • 1 in 3 of those surveyed said that their swimming abilities limited the activities they could do.
  • Over 60% of accidental drownings happen at inland water.
  • Around 49% of accidental drownings happen between May and August.
  • It is estimated that close to 2 million children have missed out on school swimming lessons in England alone, since the start of the pandemic.

No-one, no matter their circumstances, should miss the opportunity to learn vital life skills. We have swimming lessons for adults and children across 4 swimming pools.
