Conwy Sports Awards 2023 winners announced

Date: 08 December 2023

Local sporting talent from across the county of Conwy has been celebrated at a special awards ceremony.

The thirtieth Conwy Sports Awards took a place at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru on the 24th November to recognise and honour the talented sports people, sports clubs, coaches and volunteers from the county.

Over 320 people from a variety of sporting backgrounds attended the event, which was kindly sponsored by Sport Conwy.

British Sportswoman and bronze Winter Olympic medal winner, Laura Deas presented the awards to the deserving winners alongside professional sports announcer and commentator, Matt Ward who was the master of ceremonies.

Among the winners was twelve-year-old skier Xavier Poynton who won Junior Sports man. Excelling in slalom racing, he was selected for the Great Britain children’s under 14s team and was part of the winning team at the British championships in Tignes in April.

This year’s awards also saw Ysgol Y Gogarth in Llandudno pick-up the School of the Year award for their wide range of inclusive sporting health and wellbeing activities both in school and extracurricular.

There was a total of twelve categories, including the Special Achievement award presented to Conwy Yacht Club members, Richard and Petra Haig who overcome many challenges to complete a world circumnavigation this summer on their forty six foot yacht.

Cllr Aaron Wynne, Conwy County Borough Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said:

"A massive congratulations to all the winners and runners-up at this year’s Conwy Sports Awards. It was an honour to hear about the hard work and dedication of all of the nominees, a wonderful celebration of the sporting excellence in Conwy County"

"We hope that the Sports Awards will continue to inspire and motivate Conwy’s most talented in their chosen sport. Not only do we recognise the athletes, but their coaches, teams, families and sponsors, who add to their success."

"A special thank you goes to our local businesses and the organisations who have kindly supported this year’s awards, without them this event would not have been possible."

This year’s awards were supported by Sport Conwy, Route Media, Achieve More Training, Exile Sportswear, Always Aim High Events, CCBC Education Service, Llandudno Kia, Evolution Bikes, Supertemps, Powlsons, Actif North Wales, Ffit Conwy, CSM Security, and Foster Wales (Conwy).
